TYPE DESIGN MENTORSHIP

Type design is a beautiful thing, and most of us with nostalgia recall entering its magical world. At the same time, it is not a straightforward path. Information is scattered across the web, but even when collected it is not an obvious and easy-to-apply type of knowledge. Often these are notions and concepts that one starts to explore. Like with all the basic typographic qualities (spacing, balance, rhythm, width, weight, color, contrast, curve quality, etc.) it takes time to really “see” these things.

That’s why many type designers who aspire toward professional products feel they could benefit from side guidance. Someone with a trained eye to review their current font version, and overview the general project brief, concept, or execution of details.

The other set of challenges affects more experienced individuals. Designing a typeface might be a long, difficult, and lonesome road that quickly drains the initial enthusiasm. We understand how it is to be burnt out and stuck in the middle of the process, after a few months of hard work. Then putting that on hold and starting another one. Famous “drawer projects” that are so usual in our profession. Until the point that one gives up and just sketches on paper for the fun, not even starting to digitize knowing what’s waiting behind. The learning curve, type design, font engineering, and project management. All of that is on the shoulders of a single person. When working such a delicate job / alone / for a long period / with a very delayed reward — the exhaustion is more than understandable.

In either case, we’ve been down that same road as you are, and we might help considering the aesthetical, technical, and — probably most important here — psychological challenges you are facing. Seriously, it’s somewhere between therapy and professional design advice. We offer mentorship and consulting to beginner and intermediate designers, on a different scale depending on your needs and preference. The service ranges from giving a second opinion, through reviewing the current version, to defining and overseeing a full font development roadmap.

The goal of the roadmap is to keep or regain the initial enthusiasm and energy by optimizing quality standards and structuring the development timespan. We accomplish this by implementing the principles of agile project development (MVP, phases, intermediary goals, versions, and deadlines). It’s easier to develop a font when you are not alone.
